Hills Block businesses collection, 1830-1885.

The building at 333 Main Street, Hartford, Connecticut, was part of an area known as the Hills Block. This referred to the estate of Ellery and Isaac Hills. Upon the marriage of Julia Hills and Charles H. Prentice, the estate became managed by the Prentice family. Charles H. Prentice had an office in the building for his work with the Charter Oak Petroleum Company of West Virginia and the wholesale millinery business, Case and Prentice. Papers from these ventures are prominent in the collection. Edwin D. Alvord corresponded with Prentice regarding the petroleum company, and is named on many of the papers. Other major components of the collection are legal papers from the firm of Chamberlin, Hall & White and from attorney Henry E. Burton. Both the Chamberlin firm and Burton had offices in the building. There are reports from the Union for Home Work, the Hartford Charitable Society, and The Missionary Society. Burton's initials are written on some of these. A court case featuring the Hartford County Savings Association produced documentation that may be found in the collection. Similarly, property deeds to William English's land in Windsor Locks are included. Charles Prentice rose to the rank of General in the Connecticut National Guard and a section of the papers relates to his involvement with that organization. The building was later renumbered, and sold to Hartford-Aetna Bank in 1924. The block was demolished in 1990.
